How to create a good password and remember it

In general, there are three ways to create a good password and remember it:

Method 1 - Password generator

Password generators can generate very good, random passwords. An online generator is available at: https://www.zendas.de/service/passwort_generator.html.

You can use the following trick to remember these types of passwords:

Configure the selected password in the interim as the log on password for your computer. Set up the screen saver so that it requests the password during reactivation and turns itself on after one minute. After constantly having to enter the password, you will be able to remember it within a week at the latest.

A password safe represents another alternative, of course. It has the advantage of letting you select a different password for each service, which increases the overall security of your accounts even more. The German Federal Office for Information Security recommends the "keepass" open-source program.

Method 2 - The sentence method

Another good method is forming easy-to-remember sentences, with the first letter of each word serving as the password. For instance: IwbiMi1953. = I was born in Munich in 1953. The sentence is easier to remember than the password itself. It's important to avoid literature quotes and song texts however, since hackers are familiar with such tricks.

Method 3 - The password card

This is the method for the wallet. The basic idea is to generate a password card (see figure below). You can read the password for the respective service by relying on a reading schema. Your eBay password can be read as follows with this method:

The first row corresponds to the "e", the second row the "b", the third row the "a", etc.

1. e = uc

2. b = sb

3. a = E9

4. y = dl

5. . = pl

6. d = tu

7. e = !e

The eBay password then equals: ucsbE9dlpltu!e

Although you can shorten the password by converting only the first five characters, it should have at least 10.

You can create an individual password card at: https://campus.tum.de/tumonline/co_loc_pwgen.make_pwgen. Remember: The only way to ensure that no one acquires your password is to have an individual card that only you can access.

You can make the password even more secure by creating a unique method for reading the card. Even if you lose the card, there is no reason for concern.

In addition to the card for your wallet, make sure you create a backup card and maintain it in a safe place at home in case you lose the original.
