Good to see you!
We're glad that you are interested in our security tips and decided to drop by. Because who wants an insecure computer? ;)
Keep your software up-to-date
Updates are mandatory. All operating systems can be configured to automatically install important updates. While many software programs also have this feature, others must be manually updated.
Avoid dubious software sources
Never install programs from unknown sources. Instead, rely on trustworthy software directories from well-known IT publishing houses that scan the software for viruses before making it available for download (http://www.heise.de/download or http://www.chip.de/downloads).
Work with restricted rights
Do not work with administrativ rights. Instead, set up a normal user account for daily use. Assign separate passwords for the administrator and the normal user account.
Use a firewall
Utilize a firewall, which can protect your system from malware or hackers. Both Mac OS X and Windows have an integrated firewall enabled by default.
Use caution with suspicious e-mails and USB sticks from unknown sources
- To prevent your computer from being penetrated, never open suspicious e-mails or attachments.
- Never plug in a USB stick unless you know where it came from. They can conceal malware as well. To learn more about this issue, read the article "The wolf in USB clothing."
Beware of browser ads
Browser ads can also be misused to distribute malware. To learn what "malvertising" is and how you can protect your system against it, read the article "AdBlocker"
