2016 freshman class awareness campaign
The IT department, together with the departmental student councils, is once again organizing various campaigns in conjunction with freshman days.
The campaigns are designed to draw the attention of the incoming freshman class to the issue of IT security, whether it involves working with computers and smartphones or the important aspect of protecting your own data.
The campaign is based on text and videos that are available on the TUM IT website. Promotional materials and events are intended to spur students to read and learn more about the topic of IT security on our website.
Promotional materials
To increase the visibility of the awareness campaign, we are relying on various promotional materials.
Notepads
The most important materials are the IT security notepads distributed to incoming freshman by the participating departmental student councils. In the short term, anyway, the students will use – and see – the notepads while taking lecture notes, so that notepads have longer visibility than typical promotional materials. We will highlight three different IT security topics on the covers of the notepads: working securely with computers, secure WLAN access and anti-tracking protection.
Articles in the freshman information packets
Some of the departmental student councils have allowed us to place info-sheets about IT security in their freshman information packets. The focus this year is mobile IT security.
IT security tote bags
Students enrolled in teacher certification programs will receive IT security tote bags aimed at drawing attention to the importance of smartphone security. Because these students attend lectures in all of the university’s schools and departments, our tote bags will be conspicuous across the entire TUM campus and also function as an attention-grabber. .
Giveaways
As part of the incoming freshmen class events, some of the departmental student councils will hold organized rallies aimed at helping freshmen become more familiar with TUM. Giveaways will be available with the logo and link to the website printed on them.
Freshmen day events
Other smaller campaigns will be held as part of the freshmen day events in order to raise awareness among students.
Password card booths
Several schools and departments will host booths for creating and distributing password cards that students can use to generate secure, easy-to-remember passwords. The booths also offer an opportunity to further discuss the issue of IT security with students.
Brief lectures on IT security
Many of the schools and departments hold introductory lectures outlining the progression of studies and important organizational matters. Among other things, some schools and departments use these lectures to introduce students to the main IT services. As part of this effort, key aspects of IT security will be incorporated into the lectures or covered in a separate brief lecture.
Crypto parties
With the growing importance of encryption and e-mail security, plans are in place to organize at least two crypto parties where students can learn hands-on about e-mail encryption.
