Email retrieval services

Free email services such as GMX or GoogleMail offer email retrieval services that collect emails from other mailboxes and merge them into an account.

Problem: Storing access data

In order to use an email retrieval service, you have to store your account access data on the provider's system, including your password, of course. This is not permitted.

In accordance with the LRZ [1] and TUM [2] user guidelines, you may not divulge your password, not even through an automatic system.

We therefore ask you to consider the following:

Use email forwarding instead of revealing your access data

If you want to retrieve your emails from another mailbox, the best way is to forward them. Either forward your TUM emails to another mailbox or vice versa.

Loss of confidentiality

Please note: If you forward your TUM emails to providers such as GMX or Google, they may no longer be secure. Google, as an example, automatically analyzes your emails. Emails related to your exam procedure, for instance, are no exception.
