Re-design of the TUM internet presence

On June 13, 2012, the new TUM Internet presence - - was launched. The relaunch was a joint project between the Corporate Communications Center and the TUM  IT-Servicecenter  in conjunction with the  in2code web agency.

Background and goals of the project

The goal of the university was to make the Internet presence more user-friendly in all facets:

  • New texts provide a quick overview.
  • Several thousand existing pages were arranged according to subject and correspondingly linked.
  • Via categories like Studies, Research and TUM & Business, visitors can navigate more quickly from the homepage to the information they are looking for.
  • A new design that includes clearly-structured pages makes the site much easier to navigate.

In addition, all employees who are responsible for managing web pages benefit from the TYPO3 content management system, which makes content management much simpler than before.

Responsive web design

Prospective and current students are not the only ones who rely less on desktop computers for Internet access. Smartphones and tablets are increasingly popular among all visitors to the TUM website. For this reason, TUM has optimized its website for mobile devices and offers all visitors a high-quality visual and content-rich experience regardless of the device being used. The new site was implemented with state-of-the-art technology and methods such as responsive design, mobile-first, SCSS (Compass) and Extbase.
